Winning Gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Veddriq Leonardo: RI 79th Anniversary Gift

This is the first gold medal won by Indonesia at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It is also the first medal since the speed number was competed individually in Olympic history. Because at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the lead border and speed numbers were combined.

“I’m very happy, Alhamdulillah, thank you Indonesian people. This sport is new but it is given trust and can be proven by winning gold. I am grateful for this achievement and I am proud of this achievement,” said Veddriq after the race.

“This gold medal is a blessing and it is also the result of hard work, effort, dedication of all coaching teams, athletes, family friends who have given prayers and support. This is also a gift for Indonesia on its 79th birthday,” he added.

Veddriq Leonardo’s Journey

Veddriq’s journey to the first podium of the 2024 Paris Olympics has been smooth. Since the elimination seeding to the final, Veddriq has never tasted defeat.

In the quarter-finals, Veddriq who faced the host representative Bassa Mawem managed to win. Veddriq recorded a time of 4.88 seconds, while Mawem 5.26 seconds.

In the semifinals, Veddriq met Rezza Ali Pour who was also his opponent in the semifinals of the 2022 Asian Games. At that time, the climber from Pontianak lost and won a bronze medal.

However, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Veddriq was able to avenge his defeat. He managed to record a time of 4.78 seconds and Ali Pour 4.84 seconds.

In the final round, Veddriq faced China’s Wu Peng. The two had met in the small final of the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, which resulted in Veddriq winning and taking home the bronze medal.
