OAS fails to secure votes to make Venezuelan elections transparent

The Organization of American States (OAS) failed to secure the majority needed to approve a resolution on the recent elections that granted Nicolás Maduro a third six-year term in Venezuela. The vote took place on Wednesday, July 31.

The resolution was intended to Nicolas Maduro will accept his defeat and publish the election results. However, it was rejected with 17 votes in favour, eleven abstentions and five absences.

The Permanent Council of the OAS held an extraordinary meeting starting at 3:00 p.m. this Wednesday.

The event took place in the Simón Bolívar room at the headquarters in Washington, DC. The session focused on discussing the results of the electoral process in Venezuela.

The text of the resolution called on Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), which on July 29 declared Maduro’s victory, to “immediately publish the results of the vote.”

It also called for thorough verification of the results by independent organisations to ensure transparency and credibility.

In addition, it was urged to protect human rights in Venezuela and to safeguard the equipment and voting records used in the electoral process. solidarity with the Venezuelan people and the government was asked to ensure the security of diplomatic facilities and resident staff.

Argentina, Canada, Chile and other countries voted in favour of the resolution, while Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil and others abstained. Dominica, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago did not participate, as did Venezuela, which was not present.

Ambassador Ronald Sanders, president of the OAS Permanent Council, said that the representatives discussed for more than five hours to reach a consensus, but it was not achieved due to a conflicting phrase, without specifying which one.
