One person died and another was seriously injured after a fire broke out at a fireworks factory in Bulgaria on Thursday evening, causing a series of dramatic explosions. With reference to local officials and health workers, the Reuters agency wrote this today. Two other people who were apparently in the business at the time are still missing.
The explosions in the town of Elin Pelin, which is located near the capital of Sofia, began around 6:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. CET). “In the first moment I felt as if someone had slammed the door furiously. The windows were shaking. The power went out immediately,” one resident described to local television, adding that he then saw a mushroom-shaped cloud in the sky.

According to other residents, smaller explosions continued until this morning. The authorities have closed off the area, which is surrounded by agricultural land, and the army is on the scene.
According to the Bulgarian Minister of the Interior, Kalin Stojanov, si the incident claimed the life of a forty-nine-year-old man who succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire. His 20-year-old daughter is in critical condition in hospital. The 22-year-old son of the business owner and a 60-year-old employee, who were apparently inside at the time of the fire, are missing.
