After the government stopped the monthly release of the overall GST (Goods and Services Tax) data, a video is going viral on social media, claiming that the woman seen in it is the country’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and that she is calling GST a ‘confidential information tax’ and giving the reason for not releasing its data on a monthly basis.
Vishvas News found it to be false in its investigation. The woman seen in the viral video is not Nirmala Sitharaman but an artist who keeps sharing satirical videos on political matters from her social media handles. This video is also a part of the same satire, in which the government’s decision of not releasing the overall GST data on a monthly basis has been mocked. However, in this video, her face has been replaced with Nirmala Sitharaman’s face. What is viral?
Social media user ‘Devendra Surjan’ went viral Video id=’action_msg_1373’> Link) while sharing it, he wrote, “Hear the reason behind keeping GST confidential from the Finance Minister himself.”
Several other users on different social media platforms (archive Link) has shared this video with the same and similar claim.
investigation
After looking closely at the viral video, we found that the woman seen in it is not Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Also, the way she is talking about GST data is sarcastic.
To find the original source of the viral video, we used reverse image search and in the search we found this video uploaded on a YouTube channel named ‘Garima’.
The caption of the video says, “Nirdaya ji explains why the government cannot make GST data public. Also listen to what she has in mind regarding the new tax.”
According to the information given with the channel, this is a satire and parody entertainment channel, where people present their views by taking the name of a particular person.
We found many other videos on this channel in which political issues are satirized. Such videos can also be seen on the Instagram and X accounts created with the same name.
We found a post of her on Instagram in which she shared her original video and wrote, “Hello everyone! Please note, this is my original video. An AI video is being circulated in my name. I request all of you to share the original video and not the tampered one as I have not given permission to anyone to digitally alter my video and use it.”

It is worth noting that the central government has stopped releasing GST data. The Hindu Business Line Report According to the GST, since the implementation of the system, its data was released on the first of every month, but now this will not happen. In the month of June, the GST figure was Rs 1.74 lakh crore, which is 8% more than the previous financial year. The government has not given any reason for not releasing this data on a monthly basis.
