“We have the ability to take Lebanon back to the Stone Age, but we don’t want to,” Gallant said on the final day of his visit to the United States.

Since the conflict in Gaza began on October 7, there have been almost daily exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and the Iranian-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah along the border between the two countries. This month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel is preparing for an operation on the Lebanese border. Since then, the fear of full-scale war between the two countries has increased.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that an Israeli airstrike destroyed a building and injured 5 people in the country’s Nabatieh area on Wednesday. Hezbollah also claimed 6 attacks targeting Israeli military positions along the border.
Meanwhile, the UN human rights chief, Martin Griffiths, warned that such a conflict would spell doom for both countries. In a press conference in Geneva, he said, the consequences of war with Lebanon will be the same as with Syria and other countries.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told the visiting Gallant that another war with Hezbollah could have dire consequences for the Middle East. He called for a diplomatic solution to the matter. Noting that neither side wants war, a US official said, the US is continuing to discuss the issue with Middle East leaders including Israel and Lebanon.
