Insecurity in Peru increases during 2023

More than 3 million citizens were victims of robberies during the year 2023 and insecurity is overflowing, creating fear in society.

The document details that 27.1% of citizens over 15 years of age in urban areas experienced some type of crimewhich represents a significant increase compared to the 18.2% recorded in 2021. This percentage places Peru in a situation comparable to that observed between 2016 and 2017.

Among the most common crimes, the theft of cell phones, wallets and money was especially prevalent, affecting 15% of the urban adult population. In addition, regions such as Madre de Dios, Puno, Junín and Tacna reported the highest rates of robbery victimization, reflecting a worrying panorama at the regional level.

The report also highlights that only 16% of victims decided to report the crimes, which poses significant challenges for authorities in their fight against crime.
