Russia announced that it will block access to 81 media from European Union countries, including the AFP website and the portal for its clients, as part of the retaliatory measures for the restrictions imposed on Russian media.
On the list published by the Russian Foreign Ministry are Spanish-language media such as El Mundo and El Paísthe German magazine Der Spiegel, the Italian network RAI and French newspapers such as Le Monde and Libération, among others.

The EU decided in May to block the diffusion of four Russian media controlled by the Kremlin – Voice of Europe, Ria Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiïskaïa Gazeta – accused of being an “instrument” of supporting Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine.
Retaliatory measures will be imposed for access from Russian territory to the media of EU Member States,” the Ministry indicated.
“This is another sign of harassment of the press by the Russian government, because it fears that its own people will know the truth about its actions,” reacted US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
Russia stated that it will “review” the restrictions if sanctions against Russian media are lifted.

More than two years ago, the EU also vetoed the dissemination in its jurisdiction of several Russian or pro-Russian media, including Russia Today, as it accuses Russia of using these platforms to “spread its propaganda and carry out disinformation campaigns.”
