Acromegaly, which is considered an insidious disease in medicine, can lead to death if no measures are taken. The success of treatment also depends on early diagnosis.

Publika.az reports that acromegaly can occur with symptoms such as an increase in spots on the skin, enlargement of the lips, nose and tongue, and joint pain.

The disease occurs due to uncontrolled proliferation of cells in the pituitary gland. This causes changes in the body, face and bone structure. The growth that begins especially in the hands, feet and jaw disturbs the physical structure of a person.

The oldest known patient with acromegaly was the Egyptian pharaoh Akineton. Professor Tomris Erbaş of the Department of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University said that the treatment of this disease is possible:

“Unfortunately, society is not informed. Along with physical changes, if not diagnosed early, it can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.”

Erbaş emphasized that acromegaly increases the risk of heart failure, high blood pressure, colon polyps and cancer formation, constipation, thyroid gland diseases and hemorrhoids.
