A small group of young people bathed in an oil-like substance to describe the future of the environment if mining goes ahead

Ma among the most interesting moments of yesterday was, in our humble opinion, the protest of a small group of young people outside the polling station where the Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis voted. It was the intervention of members of environmental organizations against the policy of hydrocarbon extraction in Epirus, Crete and other regions of Greece. Protesters bathed themselves in molasses – a substance similar to oil – to describe the future of the environment if mining goes ahead. “The destroyers of the planet themselves are talking about the green transition and development, which is being implemented in colonial terms and in ways that will not stop the climate collapse” is pointed out in the statement, which was signed by members of the environmental organizations Nemesis (Panhellenic Federation for the Environment, Animals and Anti-Hunting), Klimataria and Scientist Rebellion Greece.

At a time when the effects of climate collapse, the main cause of which is the use of fossil fuels, have made their threatening appearance, and the government welcomes for the investigations that the oil companies are carrying out in the Ionian Sea and off Crete, yesterday’s protest was a minimal act of resistance to this criminal policy. A policy towards which the progressive forces of the country must position themselves clearly committed to the termination of the investigations and the annulment of the contracts, for the signing of which some must at some point review and apologize. Because the Left cannot identify with the politics of mining or throw water into the mill of an outdated bigotry about an alleged oil wealth that is hidden at the bottom of the Greek seas and will at some point turn the country into an energy superpower. And at some point this fairy tale must end.
