Before battery electric car enthusiasts once again shame me and address me as an impossible dinosaur who rejects the modern world, let’s take a look at the typical customer who drives a Volkswagen Multivan. Because let’s face it – the Multivan stands out among its rivals because it drives “almost like” a passenger car, but it is a van after all – and that comes with some compromises. Compromises that you probably wouldn’t make if you didn’t have something in return: in this case variability and a gigantic internal space.
The typical Multivan owner has a large family, large dogs, a number of cumbersome hobbies or a job that often requires carrying bulky loads. They also usually travel relatively long distances and this is where the obstacle comes into play. Electric cars are nice, but for a person who drives often (several times a week) hundreds of kilometers, they will not be suitable for the time being. By the way, I also agree with most reasonable electric motorists, only fanatical supporters can blindly state that daily charging at public charging stations along the highway is a hassle-free and basically pleasant and enjoyable thing.
This is not and will not be the case, but luckily it only takes a few minutes to fill up with diesel, and the Multivan with the tested two-litre TDI has a minimum range of 700 km. Inside the engine is a little audible, the bass soundtrack turns into a typical rumble in the large space of the flat-sided van – although it should be added that this only happens with more energetic acceleration, and compared to similar rivals it is actually very distant and practically audible. You barely notice the engine when it’s running smoothly, the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission is smooth, the engine is flexible enough to keep up with faster traffic, and the car’s handling is also better than you’d expect for the its category. .
But the best part of the Multivan is its versatility. It can be a van with an internal volume of almost four cubic meters or it can be used as a school minibus, or even preschool children, because all five rear seats are equipped with Isofix attachments. The central console can be moved back and transformed into a practical table, thanks to the use of the MQB platform you can count on the most modern driving assistants, the view from the steering wheel is excellent…
In short and well, I have been driving this car very well for a long time and the seventh generation has not changed the situation at all. What if I found some downsides? But of course you still have to watch the video…
