A famous YouTube activist was arrested in the United States after he released a video depicting fireworks being launched from a helicopter towards a Lamborghini.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced in a statement on Thursday that Sook Min Choi, 24, also known as Alex Choi, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with one count of causing an explosive or incendiary device to be placed on board an aircraft, according to the network. CNN American News.
According to an affidavit filed with the criminal complaint, Choi, who has nearly 1 million followers on YouTube and 1.2 million followers on Instagram, posted a video titled “Destroying a Lamborghini with Fireworks” on July 4, 2023.
The approximately 11-minute video, which is no longer posted on Choi’s social media pages, shows two women launching fireworks from the helicopter toward the sports car, the affidavit said.
The prosecutor explained, “After filming a live version simulating a fictional video game scene, the video went on to show the scene behind the scenes, with Choi appearing to point to himself coordinating the filming.”
Authorities believe the footage was filmed in June 2023 on federally owned property in San Bernardino County, California, where the Bureau of Land Management provided photos of tire marks left by the SUV, according to prosecutors.
Choi is also accused of not obtaining proper permits to film in the area, including Federal Aviation Administration approval for planned filming activities involving the helicopter.
Additionally, prosecutors said Choi traveled to Las Vegas to buy fireworks, because they are illegal in California.
Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Ciaran McEvey said no injuries had been reported as a result of the video.
Dozens of videos on Choi’s YouTube channel feature flashy luxury sports cars, although the most recent video was posted in December.
McEvey said Choi appeared for the first time in court on Thursday and was released on $50,000 bail. He did not enter a plea, and is scheduled to be charged on July 2.
According to prosecutors, the YouTuber faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted as charged.
