The Predator arrived, via Greece, in Ghana

Serious questions for yet another export of the Predator spy software from Greece to Africa emerges, according to research which claims that, in addition to Madagascar and Sudan, the specific spyware was sold by the Greek Intellexa to Ghana as well. The finding comes from a scientific investigation by malware experts from the UK’s Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. In it, they also investigated the case of Ghana, a country with a good democratic score, compared to its other neighbors, in which, however, in recent years, illegal surveillance by journalists has been reported and they themselves have fallen victim. The experts detected traces of six different commercial spyware in the country, including Predator, for the origin of which they “mapped” the Greek Intellexa.

I remind you that since the Predator exports through Athens, with permits from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, became known, the information also spoke of a third African country that had not been made known. In the meantime, Intellexa software was also detected by Amnesty International in Indonesia, raising questions about the possibility that the export was made with the permission of the Greek authorities.

I remind you that in November 2022 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched an internal investigation into the export of spyware, about which the Commission had also requested to be informed. According to reports, which have never been denied, officials were examined in this investigation and not the signatory Yannis Smyrlis (former general secretary and current director of ND), while the ministry invoked confidentiality to never inform about its results…
