Operation Galuga will showcase 35 years of the “Why Contra Remains Beloved” series.

Without a doubt one of the greatest action franchises of the 80s and early 90s was Konami’s beloved Contra series, then known in Europe as Protector . But since then, Konami has struggled to recapture the magic, and pretty much everything about Contra has been a disappointment since (with one big exception, but we’ll get to that).

Luckily, it looks like we might experience some awesome Contra action again, with the retro geniuses at WayForward releasing Contra: Operation Galuga next spring. Not only is he an experienced developer specializing in retro-inspired 2D action games, but he also made the only truly good Contra since Super Probotector’s release in 1992, 2007’s Contra 4.
In an interview with Nintendo Life, director Tomm Hulett explained why they wanted to make a new game in the series:

“Because Contra is a long-running series, Konami is sensitive to the fact that some new players might think it’s too late. Additionally, Contra’s initial story was a bit confusing (due to regional differences), so there’s an advantage in rebooting this and starting over, everyone is on the same page. One important detail though: this is not an HD remaster or an improved version. As for the game – the production design, your skills, the challenges you will face – this is a brand new Contra. I hope to lay a solid foundation for future entries.
Hulett was also asked about the connection to the classic Contra game and said there will be something for everyone and they will show why people have fallen in love with Contra for 35 years:

“We’ve definitely referenced the game outside of the original, but I don’t want to go into too much detail. I’ll save that for a post-launch “10 Things You Missed in Operation Galuga” article! But in terms of general inspiration, I hope Operation Galuga fully encapsulates the “classicism” of Contra up to this point. That means all the side-scrolling Contras. Every game has its fans, and those fans have waited many, many years to return to form: OG has to do it. As an entry point for newcomers, I also want to show why Contra has been a beloved action series for 35 years.
Contra: Operation Galuga will launch on PC, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox in the first quarter of 2024, with a date yet to be announced.
