They were completed yesterday, 1 May, exactly 20 years since Cyprus joined the European Union (along with the rest of the then Eastern European countries and Malta – big bang enlargement). The inclusion of Cyprus was a major achievement of Hellenism, the work of a group of visionary politicians, in Athens by K. Simitis, G. Papandreou, the late T. Pagalos and especially G. Kranidiotis, in Nicosia by G. Vassiliou, G. Cleridis, Ch. . Stylianidis, et al. The accession of Cyprus was an unthinkable option without the prior resolution of the Cyprus problem for Europe. No one wanted her with her problem within the European Union.
