VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristiyan Mitskoski stated that after the elections his formation will try to formand governing with the “Vredi” coalition of the Albanian opposition, which, however, set a condition for the inclusion of Bulgarians in the constitution.
The changes in the basic law entered the negotiation framework of North Macedonia and are one of the conditions for the country to start real negotiations for EU membership, but VMRO-DPMNE blocked them.
The candidate for president of VMRO-DPMNE Gordana Silyanovska-Davkova won an unexpectedly big victory in the first round last week against the current president and second-term candidate Stevo Pendarovski (SDSM), but it was not enough and there will be a runoff on May 8, when Macedonians will also vote for parliament.
The role of the Albanian parties, which had two candidates in these presidential elections, will be key.
Buyar Osmani, nominated by the “European Front” coalition, led by the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), came third with the support of 13.07% of the voters (121,088 votes). The other Albanian candidate from the Albanian opposition formation “Deserves”, Arben Taravari, mayor of Gostivar, won 9.2% or 83,393 votes.
VMRO-DPMNE is now hoping for joint action with Taravari, but the Albanian parties have already agreed not to support a government that will not support constitutional changes.
“Government candidates Stevo Pendarovski and Buyar Osmani won a total of 300,000 votes in the presidential elections. The total result of Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova and the mayor of Gostivar Arben Taravari is nearly 450,000 votes, which means one and a half times more. said the leader of VMRO-DPMNE Mickoski, quoted by BGNES.
One of the leaders of the Albanian opposition, the president of the Democratic Movement, Izet Medjiti, said, however, that the condition for a coalition with any party is the acceptance of the changes to the constitution.
The elections are key to the European integration of the country, which has been delayed until now by the pro-Russian VMRO-DPMNE. Hristiyan Mitskoski’s party blocked the inclusion of Bulgarians in the basic law, which is included in the negotiating framework of North Macedonia, and thus the country cannot start real negotiations for EU membership.
The chairman of VMRO-DPMNE also stated that in the second round of the presidential elections, VMRO-DPMNE will expect support from the voters of ZNAM, who in the first round supported their presidential candidate Maxim Dimitrievski.
It is also expected how the votes of Maxim Dimitrievski, nominated by the ZNAM movement, will be distributed. More than 83,000 people voted for him. Stevcho Yakimovski from the GROM party collected 8,121 votes. Both were previously associated with the SDSM.
