US organization donates 181 wheelchairs in Granma

MÉRIDA, Mexico -. An American Christian organization donated 181 wheelchairs for people with disabilities in the Granma province.

Twelve members of Joni and Friends received thanks from Elio Cisneros Fonseca, provincial president of the Cuban Association of People with Physical-Motor Disabilities in the territory, according to the report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

Granma is where the largest number of wheelchairs have been delivered by these Americans who began donations to Cuba more than 30 years ago.

Viviani Navea Valceira, one of the Cubans who benefited from the donation, said that her six-year-old daughter is in early childhood and she had no means of taking her to school.

The donation took place between the 8th and 12th, in areas of the EXPO Granma exhibition center, in Bayamo.

Also, members of the Juan Gualberto Gómez Friends of Cuba association, from Toronto, Canada, delivered canes, wheelchairs and crutches for people with visual disabilities on the same dates.

The Canadians also donated optometry equipment to the Ernesto Che Guevara Special Education school, in Bayamo; and medicines and supplies to health institutions.

The Christian organization Joni and Friends was founded by the North American Joni Eareckson Tada, who, in 1967, at the age of 17, suffered an accident during a dive and became quadriplegic, reports ACN.

Eareckson Tada learned to paint with his mouth and with the money raised from his paintings he founded this organization in 1979, which helps families with special needs in more than 50 countries.
