What drove food inflation?

Food inflation was one of the main contributors to the significant rise in euro area headline inflation in 2022 and, once it started to decline, also contributed to the subsequent deflation. Food inflation rose to a record high of around 15% in March 2023, which was lower only than the previous rise in energy inflation. Since then, food inflation has eased, falling to 5.7% in January 2024, but still above the pre-pandemic long-term average of 2.1%.
