Greta Thunberg is accused in Germany of making “anti-Semitic” statements for her position on Israel

The government commissioner for Jewish life in Germany and the fight against anti-Semitism, Felix Klein, today strongly criticized Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg for her recent statements about the war in the Middle East, which he described as anti-Israel and anti-Semitic.

“His one-sided remarks on the Middle East conflict are hostile to Israel and also anti-Semitic in his veiled denial of Israel’s right to exist,” he said in statements to Spiegel.

During a demonstration by the environmental movement Fridays For Future (FFF) last Sunday in Amsterdam, Thunberg appeared in the traditional black and white Palestinian headscarf and declared that the climate protection movement has a duty to “listen to the voices of those who are oppressed and who fight for peace and justice.”

He also chanted “No climate justice on occupied land” several times, in open reference to the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel.

Klein stated that Thunberg harms the climate movement and “dismantles herself and her reputation as an activist against climate change,” while regretting that with her statements she is not alone within FFF.

“Fridays for Future has so far strayed from its true purpose and is now primarily talking about radical stances on Israel and anti-Jewish conspiracy ideas. Climate protection is already an enormous challenge in itself. FFF should focus on this core competency,” he said.

Thunberg called for a ceasefire

Klein applauded that the German section of FFF “has once again, rightly, distanced itself from its international counterparts,” although he considered that this step is not enough and, in that sense, said to expect more, such as a name change, he suggested as an option.
