90 percent success in cancer diagnosis with artificial intelligence

The Ministry of Health reported that more than one million images were examined in a year with the “Artificial Intelligence Supported National Screening Mammography Reporting System” and a success rate of nearly 90 percent was achieved in the early diagnosis of cancer.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS USED IN CANCER SCREENINGS

In the statement made by the Ministry of Health, it was stated that the first studies on the National Screening Mammography Reporting System were started in 2016, and that the use of artificial intelligence was started in these studies as of 2024. The statement noted that approximately 1 million mammography images were evaluated by the algorithm following the use of artificial intelligence, and the following statements were made:

“NEARLY 90 PERCENT EARLY DIAGNOSIS

“As a result of the evaluation, suspicious findings were detected and prioritized with an accuracy of nearly 90 percent. The Artificial Intelligence Supported National Screening Mammography Reporting System analyzed more than 1 million mammography images in the last year. The artificial intelligence algorithm diagnosed cancer at an early stage with a success rate of nearly 90 percent. With the evaluation of radiologists, suspicious cases were reported through the Central Physician Appointment System (MHRS). were referred to physicians. “Thus, patients were provided with early access to treatment.”

SUSPICIOUS FINDINGS ARE AUTOMATICALLY DIRECTED TO MHRS

In the statement, it was stated that screening mammograms taken at Cancer Early Diagnosis, Screening and Training Centers (KETEM) and Healthy Life Centers (SHM) were reported through the National Screening Mammography Reporting System using the teleradiology method. It was noted that among the people who underwent mammography, those who found suspicious findings as a result of the screening were automatically directed to the Central Physician Appointment System (MHRS) through the system, and a general surgery appointment was made for these people and the treatment was started as soon as possible.

In the statement, it was stated that the first results regarding the success of the artificial intelligence-supported project have started to be obtained, and it was reported that the disease was treated before it progressed and the quality of life of the patients was increased. It was stated that people whose disease is diagnosed at an early stage need less surgical intervention, therefore the economic and psychological burden on patients is reduced, and treatment costs are also significantly reduced.

The statement also included the information that KETEM and SHMs provide free breast cancer screening to women between the ages of 40-69 every two years.
