Nine people, including children and women, were killed in separate landslides in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhia Rohingya camp due to heavy rain. At least 10-15 people were injured.
The landslide occurred in several camp areas early on Wednesday (June 19). Among the dead are two Bangladeshis including a local teenager. All the rest are Rohingya.

The deceased are residents of Block B/82 of Ukhia No. 8 East. Anwar’s son. Haresh (4), resident of Block I/4 of Camp 9, daughter of Ali Johar, Anwara Begum (18), resident of Block I/9. Jamal’s son. Salman (3), Abul Kalam (57), son of Lal Mia, resident of Block F/10 of Camp 10, Salima Khatun (42), daughter of Matiur Rahman, Abu Meher (24), daughter of Abul Kalam, Zainab Bibi (19), daughter of Sharif Hossain, Hossain Ahmed (50) son of Ali Juhar of Keranihat area of Satkania in Chittagong and Abdul Karim (12) son of Shah Alam of Thyngkhali in Palongkhali next to Camp-14. Abdul Karim, who died in a landslide at his house near Camp-14, was a student of the sixth standard of the local high school.
OC Md. Ukhia police station. Shamim Hossain said, heavy rain started in Cox’s Bazar district from midnight on Tuesday. In the last night it turned into a torrential downpour. Perhaps at some point separate landslides occurred in the four camps. Four people died in one camp, three in another camp, and one each in two camps due to landslides. Among them, two Bangladeshis including local teenagers, rest 7 are Rohingya.
Fire Service Ukhia station officer Shafiqul Islam said that the news came from the Rohingya camp on Wednesday morning about the landslide. We went to the spot and rescued a husband and wife in Camp No. 9 and 4 people in Camp No. 10 from the ground. We have not recovered the bodies of the remaining three people.
Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist of Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, said heavy rains have been falling intermittently across Cox’s Bazar since Tuesday night. 55 mm of rain fell till 12 noon on Wednesday. More rain is likely and there is a risk of landslides.
Cox’s Bazar Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said that separate landslides occurred in four separate camps in Ukhiya due to the ongoing heavy rains since Tuesday night. 9 people including children and women lost their lives. Among them, two Bangladeshis including a teenager, rest 7 are Rohingya. As the rain continues, residents of areas threatened by another landslide are being evacuated.
