More than 600,000 Azerbaijanis fought against fascism in the Second World War, and 300,000 of them died for the victory.
Azerbaijani divisions have passed an honorable battle path from the Caucasus to Berlin. 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of “Hero of the Soviet Union”, 30 people were awarded with all three degrees of the Order of Glory, more than 170 thousand of our soldiers and officers were awarded with various orders and medals.
Twice Hero of the Soviet Union Hazi Aslanov, Heroes of the Soviet Union Israfil Mammadov, Aslan Vazirov, Adil Guliyev, Ziya Bunyadov, Geray Asadov, Malik Maharramov, Mehdi Huseynzade, Generals Mahmud Abilov, Akim Abbasov, Tarlan Aliyarbeyov, Hajibaba Zeynalov contributed to the victory over fascism. .
Azerbaijan’s contribution to the great victory with fuel supply was priceless. During the 1941-45 war, more than 70 percent of the oil produced in the Soviet Union, 80 percent of the gasoline, and 90 percent of the engine oil fell to Azerbaijan. Most of the tanks and planes of the Soviet army, which played a decisive role in securing the Victory over fascism in the Second World War, were powered by fuel sent by Baku oilmen. Various types of weapons, which are very necessary for victory, were continuously produced in Azerbaijani enterprises.
Under the leadership of Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev, a new technology for purchasing aviation gasoline was created. Thanks to the dedicated work of our oil workers, a record indicator of oil production was achieved in the history of Azerbaijan, 23.5 million tons of “black gold” were extracted in 1941. This accounted for 71.4 percent of all oil produced in the USSR. As a whole, during the war years, Azerbaijani oil workers supplied the country with 75 million tons of oil, 22 million tons of gasoline and other oil products.
It can be definitely said that Baku oil was one of the main factors of the victory over fascism. Suffice it to say that four out of every five planes, tanks, and cars ran on fuel sent from Baku.
The people of Azerbaijan have shown incomparable labor skills on the rear front and have worked day and night to meet the needs of the army. Our people sent more than seven tons of donor blood to the front, and were distinguished by their active position in supplying the fighting army with food and warm clothes.
Veterans of the Second World War are the pride of our people. Their heroism during the war years is remembered with great respect by the whole society today, and the memory of our fallen compatriots is remembered with respect.
