9 years after the release of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, this franchise of Australian director, screenwriter and producer George Miller is returning to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Its much-anticipated new installment ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ has made its official selection at the Cannes Film Festival.
The grand opening of ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ will take place outside the competition section, with George Miller and the film’s three cast members Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke in attendance. The film will be screened on May 15 at the Grand Théâtre Lumiere in the Palais de Festival building.
‘Mad Max’ (1979), ‘Mad Max Two: The Challenge’ (1981), ‘Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome’ (1985), ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015) and ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ (2024) – George Miller created cathartic mythology on the big screen through five episodes of the franchise spanning nearly five decades. ‘Mad Max’ is essentially a tale of social and environmental disaster, which is relevant to the present day as well.
‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ won Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Art Direction and Best Sound Mixing. Furiosa is seen in the film. South African-American star Charlize Theron played the role.
As a prequel to ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, the new episode takes place 15-20 years ago, when a young girl Furiosa is kidnapped by marauders after an environmental disaster on Earth. But he doesn’t give up. The girl embarks on a breathless struggle to return home through the wasteland, facing numerous dangerous enemies. American star Anya Taylor-Joy plays young Furiosa.
In a statement published on the Cannes festival’s official website, George Miller said the idea for the prequel had been with him for more than a decade. The 79-year-old director said, “There’s nothing more exciting than returning to Cannes to share ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ with Anya, Chris and Tom. There is no better place to enjoy the film with a global audience than in glittering ears.”

Discovery and in US theaters on May 24. Produced by Doug Mitchell and George Miller. The screenplay was written by George Miller and Nico Lathouris.
Cannes festival organizers have thanked Warner Bros. Pictures for deciding to release ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ on big screens worldwide despite the OTT frenzy.
George Miller’s relationship with the Cannes festival is close. ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ was placed out of competition in 2015. In 2016, he became the chief judge of the main competition division. His last 2022 directorial ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ was out of competition.
