7 famous sci-fi movies from which a scene was deleted

In the case of Back to the Future, ET and The Avengers, an interesting scene each landed on the cutting room floor.

We have already presented which scenes were deleted from Death Ship, The Fly, Robot Cop or 2001: A Space Odyssey, then in a second article we continued the topic with Looper, Winged Bounty Hunter and Jurassic Park, among others. There are still plenty of exciting behind-the-scenes secrets for the third part of the article series.

Back to the Future – Marty’s dad would have smoked more

In Robert Zemeckis’ classic, Michael J. Fox’s character finds himself in the ’50s, where he meets his parents. Marty confronts him that his father, George (Crispin Glover), is a real geek, and when Marty’s mother, Lorraine (Lea Thompson), instead of George begins to have romantic feelings for her, our hero is forced to help his father get together with his future mother, or his own existence will be in danger, because we can see how the local dude Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) terrorizes him a scene in which George is sucked in even more.

At the climax of the film, during the ball scene, George prepares to “save” Lorraine from Marty, who is behaving inappropriately as planned. his mischievous classmates lock him in the cubicle, when Principal Strickland arrives, and instead of freeing him, scolds him for his supposed laziness.

This scene was probably cut due to pacing issues or reduced running time, even though it would have explained why George didn’t get to the car in time to stop Marty.

Star Trek 10. – Nemesis – Data’s cat gets a new owner

The last film of the cast of Star Trek – The Next Generation, 2002’s Nemesis, was panned by critics, saying it was boring, lifeless and lacking all the charm of the TV series. However, quite a few deleted scenes could have helped make up for what was missing, such as the interactions between Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden). While fans have known about these cut scenes for a long time, one recently surfaced that never appeared on any DVD release.

The scene takes place after the death of the android Commander Data (Brent Spiner). Aboard the Enterprise, still undergoing repairs, Worf (Michael Dorn) and Geordi (LeVar Burton) search the cabin of their late comrade. We can see them looking through various items, several of which refer back to episodes of their old series, including the violin that Data played as Sherlock Holmes. But the most touching moment comes when Data’s cat, Spot, leaps into the arms of grumpy Klingon Mr. Worf, who reluctantly declares, “I’m not a cat type.” Geordi’s answer:

Looks like you are now.”

Star Trek – In Darkness – The Marcus thread running in the background

After Star Trek 10. – Nemesis, the franchise was rebooted by JJ Abrams in 2009, and in view of the great success, the sequel could be completed in 2013. Star Trek Into Darkness once again focused on Khan, played here by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, as an even more ruthless and cunning villain. But this time he was manipulated by a Starfleet covert action group called Section 31, led by Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller). Although it is not revealed until later in the final version of the film who is behind it, a deleted scene almost kills the joke.

Thomas Harewood, who is preparing to detonate a bomb in London on Khan’s instructions, sends a video message to Marcus, who receives the broadcast in his office. Harewood informs him that what is about to happen is a message from Khan. In the end, however, the scene was cut because it revealed too much about the characters in the conspiracy. “We felt it was very important not to introduce the admiral in any way or hint at who he would become later in the film” said the film’s editor Mary Jo Markey in the film’s audio commentary. “We realized that it would be more shocking if we didn’t show it for a long time.”

Avengers: Infinity War – An extra 45 minutes of action scenes

An entire decade of storylines converged in Infinity War, where almost all of the MCU heroes lined up to fight the great arch-villain Thanos. A lot had to be packed into such a huge, galaxy-spanning story, and the almost two and a half hour film was also accused of being long and overcrowded. However, according to Jim Starlin, who created the character of Thanos, the original plan was to open the film with a 45-minute action sequence.

Instead of opening the film with an attack on an Asgardian ship, as in the final version, we would have seen Thanos attack the planet Xandar first, where he obtained the Power Stone.

“There was a whole scene where he got the first Infinity Stone, and they had to cut that out,” Starlin explained in an interview with Collider. “They shot it, but they didn’t want to spend money on effects and they didn’t want the movie to be as long as the second Avengers. They didn’t think it would be as big a hit.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – One less horror scene

The heads of the MCU knew what to expect when they asked Sam Raimi to direct. The creator of the Evil Dead has created one of the most disturbing films in the history of the franchise, which is supported by a cut scene. In the film, Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) confronts Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who drifts over to the dark side after Vision’s death and her children being taken from her in the WandaVision series. He is looking for an alternate reality where he and his family can live in peace, so he travels the multiverse and slaughters everyone who gets in his way.

We see him execute Mr. Fantastic (John Krasinski), Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Black Lightning (Anson Mount) in the film, but according to a deleted scene, he’s even more depraved. It is not known if this scene was filmed, but the storyboards were completed and Jimmy Simser, who worked on the film, posted them on his Instagram. These drawings show the moment the Scarlet Witch arrives at the Kamar Taj to capture America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). However, in this version, Wanda is not alone, as she brings with her the severed head of Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

Bill and Ted’s Ingenious Adventure – It would have started as a rock musical

In the 1989 cult comedy, two California teenagers, Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves), use a time-traveling phone booth to travel back in time to meet historical figures to help them pass their exams. They end up saving the future and becoming humanity’s greatest heroes. Several deleted scenes have surfaced over the years, and in 2020 regarding the shooting of the third film Alex Winter took to his Twitter page to show images from the original opening scene.

It would have been a surreal song insert in which Bill and Ted are waiting for the morning school bus at a bus stop and start playing air guitar, then a big dance scene begins, and at the end the two main characters get into trouble with the school’s football players.

ET – The Extraterrestrial – Peeping space creature

Spielberg’s classic was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won Best Original Score and three other technical awards. The story of the strange foreign visitor with whom the child protagonists befriend is still considered one of the most popular family films of all time. However, there are some deleted scenes that could have changed the tone of the film.

There was a comic scene that didn’t make it into the final cut because the ET dummy just wasn’t convincing which was improved with CGI and put into a later version , and another would have stood out from a film intended for children and families. This scene, which surfaced decades later thanks to some work photos, shows Elliott’s mother, Mary (Dee Wallace), sleeping face down but shirtless in bed late at night. Meanwhile, the alien sneaks into her bedroom and watches her silently. They probably wanted to show how ET marvels at people, but these sequences could have been suitable to disturb the tranquility of the family target audience.
