The UK has imposed sanctions on six top officials at the Russian Arctic penal colony where Alexei Navalny died. The country has also imposed restrictions on their assets and travel. The British media reported the news.
Regarding the sanctions against the six prison officers, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said that all those responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny will be held accountable. It is known that this is the first time that any country has imposed sanctions in connection with Navalny’s death.
Those who have been sanctioned are Penal Colony Chief Colonel Vadim Konstantinovich Kalinin, Deputy Chief Lieutenant Colonel Sergey Nikolaevich Korzov, Deputy Chief Lieutenant Colonel Vasily Alexandrovich Vidrin, Deputy Chief Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Ivanovich Pilipchik, Deputy Chief Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vladimirovich Golyakov and Deputy Head Colonel Alexander Valerievich Obrezhtsov.
When announcing the ban, David Cameron said Navalny was seen by Russian authorities as a threat. So they repeatedly tried to silence him. He should not be suspected of being tortured. So we have imposed sanctions on these top officials in the prison.
According to reports, Navalny was a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Navalny, 47, was the leader of the opposition. He has been imprisoned since 2021. The leader was serving time in a prison (penal colony) in Northern Siberia since the end of last year. He died in jail last Friday.
