They are about 508 million years old, making them among the older trilobites, and their extraordinary level of preservation allows scientists to see details never seen before.
As reported by IFL Science, these trilobites were preserved in pyroclastic flows, hot material that comes out of a volcano.
Normally, this material would incinerate all life in its path, but in this case, the trilobites were buried in the sea. Seawater helped cool the ash, preserving the trilobites in incredible detail.
The trilobite’s small shell was still intact in place, and even soft tissues such as the mouthparts and internal organs were still visible. This allowed scientists to study the anatomy and biology of trilobites with an unprecedented level of detail.
This discovery provides important information about the evolution of trilobites and how they lived in marine environments.
Scientists hope to learn more about these trilobites and other ancient sea creatures by studying these fossils.
