5 killed in militant attack on Iranian police – 2024-04-11 11:43:06

Sunni militants attacked two police vehicles in southeastern Iran. At least five police officers were killed in the attack on Tuesday (April 9). The British news agency Reuters reported this news on Iran’s state TV.

Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for the attack in Sistan-Baluchistan province. A few days earlier, 11 members of the security forces were killed in an attack on two bases of the Revolutionary Guards in the same region.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency said the police officers were returning from a visit to the scene of the shooting of another police officer last month during a drug bust.

The Jaish al-Adl group has demanded greater rights and better living standards for the minority Baluchis in Shia-dominated Iran. They have claimed responsibility for several attacks on Iranian security forces in the province over the past few years.

The province of Sistan-Baluchistan is located on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Iran’s security forces have been regularly clashing with Sunni militants and drug traffickers for a long time.

Iran is a major transit route for drug trafficking from Afghanistan to the Western world and elsewhere.
