Lost, Star Trek – The New Generation and Stargate were also good series only in their time, and today viewers would cancel their streaming subscription because of them.
1. Lost (2004–2010)
A Lost is undeniably a classic in TV history, and will forever be so – even if fans would like to forget the horrors of the last season here as well as the Game of Thrones case.
However, in the early 2000s, this series was at its best: holding millions in a frenzy and unlike anything that came before or since.
The series, awarded with several Emmy awards, followed the survivors of a plane crash on a tropical island where increasingly strange supernatural phenomena occurred. However, JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof’s masterful dramaturgical twists and new mysteries were frustrating after a while, and many people were left with a bitter taste in their mouths after the series because there were more questions at the end than a reassuringly explained answer.
2. Star Trek – The Next Generation (1987–1994)
A Star Trek franchise is now as much an integral part of pop culture as the Star Wars. In addition, the crew of the Enterprise NCC 1701-D spaceship commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was already radically different from Captain Kirk’s company. While William Shattner was constantly shooting and getting into lame fights with all kinds of people, here every single episode provided a thought-provoking sci-fi experience, and the makers worked on a surprising number of social and political topics. These stand up well to today’s audience, but aesthetic problems cannot be ignored: the Star Trek – The New Generationben
loads of lame costumes, weak effects and ridiculous hairstyles!
In addition, the acting of many of the characters leaves a lot to be desired, so this series, which was once great, today it can look slow, flat and boring to viewers.
3. Stargate (1997 – 2007)
A Stargate TV series is considered a classic in every way. The 1994 one Stargate based on a movie, the series followed the specially trained elite team of the American Air Force, who set out on an expedition through space and time, in a seemingly limitless universe, with the help of the title’s Stargates, that is, the mysterious alien gateways that have existed since ancient times. The series, which combines war dramas with elements of the sci-fi genre and ancient myths, was loved by viewers back then not only because of its unique atmosphere, but also because, thanks to the development of television technology at the time, the series more than once offered a spectacle as if we were watching a movie!
Unfortunately, however, in 2024, these same technological gimmicks and special effects seem as old and archaic as the ancient myths mentioned above.
Although the Stargate series has a rented place in the hearts of millions to this day, it’s simply not the same nowadays as it once was, and is crying out for a reboot.
4. Heroes (2006–2010)
We can safely say that without Tim Kring’s cult TV series, superhero movies would not be so popular today! THE heroes for it was one of the most popular TV shows of its time, centered around ordinary people who one day discover they have extraordinary abilities, from telekinesis to time travel. They also learn that even though they are divinely-powered chosen ones, they must work together to escape the evil Sylar (Zachary Quinto), who can steal anyone’s superpowers and wants to acquire all the supernatural powers in the world at any cost.
Although the series promised a twisty story, the concept soon crumbled under the weight of the weak story, and the sci-fi elements became increasingly faint.
The makers tried cliffhangers and surprising twists, which may have worked at the time, but the audience can see through this superficiality in retrospect.
5. Sliders (1995-2000)
The adventure of the team hopping between dimensions and looking for their home started off well, but then the standard began to drop sharply, and with it the viewership.
The series was canceled in the 5th season, but with such a cliffhanger at the end that those who got there must be scolding the creators even today!
As a result of the “slip” between worlds, our heroes sometimes fall into a place where the roles of men and women are reversed, at other times into a place where viral diseases are rampant or underground movements flood the Earth. At the end of the last episode, the main characters find a passage, but a seer warns them that if they “slip” one more time, they will die, and they can only survive if they inoculate themselves with a special substance. Remy, the only remaining member of the original four, then injects himself and jumps. What happens to him next? We never found out – and such a bug is now an unforgivable crime in the eyes of a serial addict!
