At least 40 of the 49 victims of the fire that broke out in an apartment building in Mangaf, Kuwait on June 12 are Indians. This was announced by the Ministry of External Affairs of India.

Another 50 Indians were injured as a result of the fire. they are receiving treatment in hospitals in Kuwait.

According to the report, on the instructions of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh left for Kuwait to take care of the remains of the victims and provide medical care to the injured. He informed that DNA tests are being conducted to identify the victims.

The BBC reports that dozens of migrant workers lived in the building that caught fire.

According to local media, 196 workers lived in the building. It is believed that the building was overcrowded.

Apart from Indians, among the victims are also citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines and Nepal.

The BBC notes that two-thirds of Kuwait’s population consists of expatriate workers, and the country is heavily dependent on migrant labour, particularly in the construction and domestic sectors.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern about their living conditions.
