The move comes in response to concerns about a wider regional conflict following the recent killings of senior Hezbollah and Hamas leaders.
According to the BBC, this signals the US’s determination to help defend Israel from any attack by Iran. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the US would “take every possible step” to defend its ally.
The submarine sent by the US to the Middle East is the USS Georgia (SSBN-729) which is one of the Ohio-class ships. Reported from The Nuclear Threat Initiative, the United States submarine force consists of four operational classes, the following are among them.
4 Most Advanced US Submarines
1. Ohio Class
The Ohio class consists of 14 SSBNs that serve as the sea-based leg of the US nuclear triad. The Ohio-class US submarines are still the favorites because they are based in strategic lanes.
Initially this type of submarine was equipped with 24 launch tubes, but the number was reduced to 20 to meet the limitations under New START.
Combined, all Ohio-class submarines will carry 960 warheads. Although the favorite, the Columbia-class SSBN program is expected to replace the Ohio-class submarines.
2. Los Angeles Class
The nuclear-powered Los Angeles-class SSN carries Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs) and MK-48 torpedoes. The ship is designed not only for anti-submarine warfare, but is also capable of deploying Special Forces and laying mines.
The Los Angeles is considered the backbone of the US submarine fleet with 34 currently in service. Some of the submarines in this class include the USS Providence and USS San Juan.
3. Seawolf Class
The US Navy also has three Seawolf-class boats, based at Bangor Trident Base in Washington state. This class of submarine is known to be faster and quieter than the Los Angeles-class.
The ship’s stealth capabilities also make it suitable for Special Forces deployment. Although it lacks vertical launch capability, the submarine can still fire Tomahawk missiles through its torpedo tubes.
4. Virginia Class
The Virginia class, designed by Electric Boat Corporation of Connecticut, represents the next generation of US nuclear attack submarines and a more cost-effective alternative to the Seawolf class.
With 22 boats already commissioned, the Virginia class will take over the operational role of the Los Angeles class. These submarines are capable of operating effectively in littoral waters, especially due to their “fly-by-wire” control system, giving them an advantage over the Los Angeles class.
Additionally, unlike the Seawolf class, the Virginia class has vertical launch tubes to fire Tomahawk land-attack missiles.
