JAKARTA – The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is one of six tiger subspecies that still live in the world. Even though their numbers are no longer large, these tigers are distributed in the wild in forests and swamps in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. Some of them also live in conservation parks and zoos.

In terms of body shape, the Bengal Tiger is the second largest cat species in the world after the Siberian Tiger. The Bengal tiger rivals the Siberian tiger with thick fur and is larger in size and lives in cold climates.

Another characteristic that differentiates it from other tigers is that it has bright orange fur with black or dark brown striped motifs. A rare white-furred variant of this subspecies, aka the white tiger, also exists.

Apart from that, the Bengal tiger also has the largest canine teeth among all the cat families. The length of the fangs can reach 10 centimeters. Bengal tigers also have strong claws so they have the ability to climb trees to chase their prey.

The largest male Bengal tiger can grow to about 3.2 meters and weigh almost 295 kg. Females are smaller, the largest measuring about 2.7 meters and weighing up to 181 kg. They prey on deer, antelope, gaur and wild boar.
