4 Distinctive Characteristics of Sumatran Tigers that Distinguish them from Other Types of Tigers

JAKARTA – Sumatran tiger or which has the Latin name Panthera tigris sumatrae, has a number of distinctive characteristics that differentiate it from other tigers. These characteristics are mostly related to the physical characteristics they have.

According to the Kerinci Seblat National Park website, the Sumatran tiger is an animal that is included in the critically endangered species on the red list of threatened species released by the world conservation organization IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

One of the biggest threats experienced by this species is the loss of their habitat due to illegal encroachment, illegal burning and so on. Not only that, they are also hunted and bought and sold for their skins.

This loss of habitat is what makes a number of Sumatran tigers often enter residents’ areas and carry out attacks. In fact, some time ago there were a number of Lampung residents who were attacked by this tiger.

As an animal that can only be found in Indonesia, this tiger has its own characteristics. There are several physical characteristics that differentiate it from other tigers such as the Siberian and Bengal tigers.

1. Smaller Size

Sumatran tigers tend to be smaller in size compared to tigers from other species, such as Bengal tigers or Siberian tigers. Its smaller body allows it to move more nimbly in dense tropical forests.

2. Darker Fur Color

Sumatran tiger fur tends to be darker than that of other species. Their fur is often dark brown to black with a distinctive striped pattern. Apart from that, the fur of this type of tiger can also be said to be the shortest compared to other types of tigers.

3. Fewer Number of Stripes

Sumatran tigers have fewer stripes compared to tigers of other species. Usually, the stripes on the Sumatran tiger’s body are denser and sometimes almost merge.

4. Physical characteristics of the face

The face of the Sumatran tiger tends to be more narrow and convex, with smaller ears compared to tigers of other species.

These are a number of characteristics that differentiate Sumatran tigers from other types of tigers. As protected animals, it is appropriate for us to preserve them and not allow these endemic Indonesian animals to become extinct.
