The mobile court of RAB-7 has arrested 38 brokers by raiding Chittagong Medical College (Chamek) Hospital. During the raid, RAB got information about multiple brokers at different levels of the hospital. The operation was conducted from morning to noon on Wednesday (March 20).
The mobile court sentenced 24 people arrested in the raid to one month rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 5,000. Besides, the remaining 14 people have been fined Tk 10,000 and sentenced to one month rigorous imprisonment.
Captain of RAB-7 Chittagong Lt. Col. Mahbub Alam said, ‘RAB team in white clothes raided different wards of the hospital. At that time, 39 suspects were arrested. Scrutiny of these is left to the last one. The rest were punished as the charges were proved.’
In the RAB operation, the issues of how sick and helpless patients are being harassed in the government hospital in Chittagong have come up. Where it has been seen, after a patient comes to the hospital for a commission, from the admission to the transport of the dead, the commission has been taking advantage of the weakness of the patients and their relatives to trade with multiple broker circles.
Professional brokers
The owners of the private clinics and diagnostic centers established in the district and upazila hospital areas form broker circles with local influential people, CNG autorickshaw and easybike drivers. The influence of dalal clique is noticeable in almost every government hospital. Brokers take patients to private diagnostic centers and hospitals citing the inadequacy of medical facilities in government hospitals. Doctors are also taking private diagnostic centers to private diagnostic centers in the hope of getting a commission by enticing patients to get tests done quickly.
Bed and Ward Syndicate
Ordinary patients who come to the hospital for treatment from remote areas are hampered after being admitted. First, the brokers grab a certain amount of money by promising to get patients from patient trolleys to beds and wards in an emergency.
Fear of communicable diseases
The brokers try to instill a fear in the patient right after he arrives at the hospital for treatment. The victim takes the patient to a private clinic or diagnostic center by telling him about his real illness and admitting him to a terminal cancer or tumor or any other major disease. As a result, patients are deprived of free treatment and low-cost tests in government hospitals. Just as the relatives return home after spending more money, in the same way the patient dies due to the lack of good treatment in substandard hospitals due to the lure of brokers.
Ambulance Syndicate
Although there is a government ambulance in the hospital, spreading rumors of its inadequacy, the syndicates rent private ambulances at a high rate of Rs. Even on the eve of transferring a patient under treatment from one hospital to another hospital for better treatment and even carrying his dead body from the hospital when a patient dies, these brokers are accused of taking extra money by syndicate.
Experiment Syndicate
The brokers take their contracted private diagnostic centers to the hospital doctors with the lure of speeding up various tests and hoping to get a commission.
Drug trade syndicate
After receiving treatment from government hospitals, patients are diverted from receiving free government-supplied drugs to certain commissioned pharmacies with the lure of buying better quality drugs at lower prices. Later, by showing the artificial shortage of drugs by the pharmacy, they sell the drugs at higher prices than the normal price.
Interrogation of the arrested brokers revealed that if they bring a patient from Chamek Hospital, the brokers get a commission of Tk 200 to Tk 500 from private hospitals and up to Tk 5000 depending on the situation.
