The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) will carry out today the act of Certification of Results of the 2024 Presidential Elections, which recognizes Nayib Bukele as the legitimate winner of the elections held on February 4, to govern in the five-year period that will begin on the 1st. June 2024 and will end on June 1, 2029.
This event will be held at the National Theater, located in the Historic Center of San Salvador, near the area where thousands of people gathered on February 4 to celebrate the victory at the polls of the New Ideas candidate, Nayib Bukele, who He gave a speech from the National Palace.
Bukele will assume the position of president not only legitimized by the five judges of the TSE, who on February 17 signed the minutes of the final scrutiny that declared the electoral results final, but also by the support of 2,701,725 Salvadorans who voted for five more years. of his presidential administration.
Nayib Bukele’s historic victory at the polls (obtaining support from 84.65% of valid votes) attempted to be taken away by the opposition political parties (ARENA, FMLN, VAMOS and Nuestro Tiempo) in three moments: the first, by filing briefs before the TSE to prevent the registration of the cyan candidacy, arguing unconstitutionality in the presidential re-election, rejecting the ruling of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice that enabled the second immediate term. Despite the political pressure exerted by these parties, the writings were rejected by the Court.
Finding themselves unsuccessful in the first attempt, the opposition requested the annulment of the aforementioned registration, which was also rejected. Finally, after the elections, the opposition requested the annulment of the final count and therefore of the elections that declared Nayib Bukele as the winner; however, like the two previous occasions, the collegiate body rejected the requests.
Despite the opposition’s questions, the international community, as well as national and foreign electoral observers, recognized the transparency of the process and validated the results that gave Nayib Bukele the winner of the presidential election, and recognized the triumph of Nuevas Ideas by win 54 of the 60 deputies of the Legislative Assembly for the three-year period 2024-2029.
René Martínez, sociologist and analyst, considers that the certification of electoral results is a protocol act; However, they credit the triumph of the Salvadoran president.
«What is really relevant and historical is that what accredits and legitimizes [a Nayib Bukele] as constitutional president is the unprecedented massive vote that he received from his people (85%), which is an unprecedented historical fact, both in the country and around the world, since no president has received that amount of support in an electoral process. », Martínez assessed.
Political scientist and analyst Óscar Peñate agreed that the support that Nayib Bukele obtained at the polls on February 4 is unprecedented, and highlighted that the electoral process was developed in a transparent manner and in an environment of peace and security thanks to the combat of the gangs promoted by the president.
Prior to election day, several national and international polling houses published their opinion poll results, reflecting that Salvadorans were in favor of the security policy promoted by Nayib Bukele to restore peace and tranquility to the communities besieged by the gangs. This security policy is based on the Territorial Control Plan, reinforced with the emergency regime.
