The country’s traditional sari from Tangail, Rasgolla from Gopalganj and Amrit Sagar Kala from Narsingdi have been recognized as GI products.
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun handed over the journal of GI recognition of these 3 products to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the beginning of the cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday (February 11).
At this time, the Industries Minister handed over the Journal of Tangail Saree, Amrit Sagar Kala of Narsingdi and GI certificate of Rasgolla of Gopalganj and Tangail Saree of Design and Trademark Department of the Ministry of Industries to the Prime Minister.
In the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed the related ministries including the Industry Ministry to find out the products which can be recognized as GI.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the chairperson of the meeting, also instructed to file a complaint with the international organization WIPO if there is any problem with GI products.
It should be noted that recently the famous Tangail saree of Bangladesh was recognized as its own GI product by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India. In a post on their verified Facebook page, India’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs said, ‘Tangail saree originated in West Bengal. It is a traditional handwoven masterpiece. Famous for its fine texture, varied colors and delicate Jamdani motifs. It is a symbol of the region’s rich cultural heritage.’
Later, the news quickly spread in Bangladesh on social media. Many have expressed their displeasure over recognizing the country’s icon, the famous Tangail saree, as a GI product of another country. Tangail saree, a symbol of the country’s tradition, has been recognized as a GI product of Bangladesh.
