In a video message on social media on Monday (February 19), the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management Sayek said that 25 people died and eight were injured due to the landslide.
Sayek also said that the death toll may increase. Most of Nuristan province, located near the Pakistan border, is covered by hilly forests. It is located on the southern edge of the Hindu Kush mountain range. Provincial officials said rescue operations were hampered by snow.
Mohammad Nabi Adel, head of the public works department of the province, said that even helicopters could not land in Nuristan city due to cloudy skies and rain. He said that the main road of the province is covered due to snow. As a result, rescue operations have become difficult.
About 20 houses were destroyed or heavily damaged, Jamiullah Hashimi, the province’s head of information and culture, told AFP.
He said, it is still snowing. In the meantime rescue work is going on. He expressed fear that the death toll may increase. However, snowfall has started late this year in most parts of Afghanistan.
According to the data provided by the United Nations, Afghanistan is now one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. The country has already been struggling with unfavorable conditions due to drought for three consecutive years.
