As the 98 approachese Oscars or Academy Awards ceremony to be held on March 15, 2026 in Los Angeles, a call for candidates was recently launched by a local commission responsible for appointing the film which will represent Madagascar. The selected film will represent the country in the Best International Film 2026 category (Academy Award for Best International Feature Film).
As a reminder, cinema Oscars or Academy Awards represent the highest cinematographic distinction in the United States. It has been awarded by the Academy of Arts and Cinema Sciences since 1929. The ceremony takes place each year in Los Angeles, California.
This call is intended for film producers Malagasy fiction feature film. The film, which should last at least 60 minutes, must have been released publicly for the first time between 1is October 2024 and September 30, 2025. A commercial exit in Madagascar at least seven consecutive days is also compulsory. But other criteria are also required. The film must be mainly produced in Madagascar or by Malagasy producers, with the significant contribution of local talents, and must also be in the Malagasy language. Since it is an international competition, compliance with international technical standards, including the projection format, is of course required by Academy.
The local selection committee will hold a meeting on 1is Next September. The film which will represent Madagascar will have to be sent to the Academy no later than October 1, 2025. The latter will then announce the list of 5 appointed on January 22, 2026.
Production companies wishing to submit their candidacy are required to do so no later than August 15, 2025.
