2023 champions for L’Equipe: Djokovic and Biles, Kopecky at 10

At the end of the year, the leading sports newspaper L’Equipe traditionally organizes a referendum among its editors.

Among the men, the winner was Djokovic: the 36-year-old Serbian won 3 of the 4 Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open, Roland Garros, US Open) and lost the Wimbledon final. The 24-time Slam champion ends the year number 1 again, after triumphing at the Masters, winning for the seventh time, a record.

With 876 points, Djokovic is well ahead of French swimmer Léon Marchand (361) and Dutch F1 driver Max Verstappen (348).

Among women, Biles stands out. Upon her return to the World Championships in Antwerp, the 26-year-old American won 4 gold medals (team, all-around, floor exercise and beam) and silver on vault. This brings her to 23 world titles.

Biles scored 812 points, the women’s podium is completed by American skier Mikaela Shiffrin (709) and American swimmer Katie Ledecky (446).

With 55 points we find Lotte Kopecky in 10th place. World road champion, Tour of Flanders winner, good for green and second in the Tour saw Tour winner Demi Vollering (246 points) in 5th place.

Last year, the Polish Iga Swiatek, number 1 in tennis, and the Argentine footballer Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to the world title, were awarded.
