Two people, including a school student, were killed in a lightning strike in Narsingdi. Two others were injured.
The incident took place at Bhatpara Chakshal area of Panchdona Union of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila around 5:30 pm on Thursday (May 9).
The deceased are Kabir Mia, son of Amir Islam of Chakshal Bonder Gao village of Panchdona Union and Vijay, son of Taher Ali of Batpara area. Among them were fifth class students of Vijay Bhatpara Government Primary School. Kabir Mia was a laborer by profession.
According to local sources, while harvesting paddy in Chakshal area in the afternoon, Kabir Mia and schoolboy Vijay died due to lightning while playing football in the nearby field.
Meanwhile, the paddy cutter Siraj Mia and the child Saurabh were injured. Sourav was playing football. The injured were rescued and taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.
The owner of the land, Momen Mia of Chakshal area, said that three laborers were brought from Panchdona Mor to harvest the paddy of the land. They cut paddy till noon. After noon, when I went to the field and started harvesting rice again, it started raining with thunder. Meanwhile, they tried to take shelter in the tent pulled up next to them to protect them from the rain. The two workers managed to get to the tent but Kabir Mia failed. He was killed by lightning before reaching the tent.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital Dr. Mohammad Mahmudul Kabir Bashar said that three people were brought to the hospital due to lightning. One of them is believed to have died on the spot. The remaining two were discharged with first aid.
Madhavadi Police Station OC Mohammad Kamruzzaman said two people died in Chakshal area due to lightning. Two others were injured.
