May 30 World Multiple Sclerosis Day was established by the World Federation of Multiple Sclerosis Societies, which deals with the problem. According to statistics, the number of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis in the world is about 2.8 million people.
In Azerbaijan, multiple sclerosis is one of the urgent issues of healthcare. On February 28, 2018, the “State Program for 2018-2022 on Multiple Sclerosis treatment, prevention and measures to combat it” was approved by the Order signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev. Necessary conditions have been created to increase the scope and quality of examination and treatment in state medical institutions, and to improve their supply with injection tools and drugs, including more effective drugs.”
Later, Teymur Mirzabayli, head of the Department of Specialized Medical Assistance of TABIB, spoke at the conference and said:
“No proven preventive measures for multiple sclerosis have been developed in the world. But considering that the abnormal activity of the human immune system plays a key role in multiple sclerosis, it is important to note the following factors that damage this system: avoiding smoking and alcohol, normal duration and quality sleep, trying to adapt to the mental stress factors that constantly press us, where you were born and raised living in the area and climate, providing moderate physical activity. Such a lifestyle is very important in the prevention of multiple sclerosis and other nervous system diseases.”
The head of the Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology of the Aziz Aliyev Azerbaijan State Medical Training Institute, Professor Rena Shiraliyeva told the conference participants that:
“Multiple sclerosis is a disease that damages the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord, and causes disruption of relevant functions in the body. Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease that usually begins at a young age, progresses, and can eventually lead to severe disability if left untreated. The most unpleasant feature of this disease is that it causes serious disability at a young age.”
The conference continued with the reports of Ayten Huseynova, head of the Department of Nervous Diseases of the Republican Clinical Hospital, neurologists Nuray Hamidova, Narmin Abdullayeva, Gunel Asadova and Nargiz Majidzadeh.
