1º de Agosto becomes national basketball champion

The 1st of August, became national men’s senior basketball champion, by winningthis Tuesday (5), Petro de Luanda 101-82, in the fifth game of the best-of-seven playoff final.

The fortieth edition of Unitel Basket had as its top scorer with 679 points, winger Gerson Gonçalves “Lukeny”, from Petro de Luanda, who also came out as the best recoverer, best assist and most valued player in the regular phase of the competition.

His teammate, Leonel Paulo, was the best of the two points, Edson Ndoniema (1º de Agosto) the best triplist, Waldir Gonçalves (Marinha de Guerra) best in free throws and Sekouba Condé (Petro de Luanda) was the best scorer .

Eduardo Mingas was once again elected MVP of the national senior men’s basketball championship (Unitel Basket), which ended today (Tuesday) at the Vitorino Cunha pavilion. Eduardo Minguas dethroned Olímpio Cipriano, who won the title in 2017 with Recreativo do Libolo.

The best coach of the national championship was Paulo Macedo (1º de Agosto), the best referee was Clésio Francisco, while Childe Dundão (Petro de Luanda) was considered the fairplay player.

Speaking to the press at the end of the match in which they beat Petro de Luanda 101-82, the coach said that, despite having lost three games in the regular phase, determination and dedication led the group to the title.

“This year the sports season was very long and all the teams did very well, especially Petro de Luanda, who with a very young team knew how to make a difference”, said the coach.

Paulo Macedo added that he has two years left in charge of the team and that next season he will look to repeat the feat.
