17 baby turtles born on Nhon Hai beach, Quy Nhon city (Binh Dinh) are the first turtle eggs to hatch out of 400 eggs of a mother turtle of a rare species.
On the morning of July 9, Mr. Nguyen Ton Xuan Sang, a member of the Nhon Hai aquatic resources protection community group (Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh), said that 17 baby turtles hatched from eggs laid by a mother turtle on May 21.
According to Mr. Sang, at around 7:00 p.m. on July 8, after receiving news that local people had discovered baby turtles crawling on the beach, members of the Nhon Hai aquatic resources protection community group came to protect and support the release of the turtles back to the sea.

“At the time of discovery, there were 17 baby turtles. Upon inspection, some of them had crawled into the sea before. On the morning of July 9, officers from the Binh Dinh Fisheries Department will come to inspect and count the number of shells to calculate the percentage,” said Mr. Sang.
According to the leader of Nhon Hai Commune People’s Committee, this is a joy as well as a result of the efforts of the people and the government to conserve sea turtles.
Earlier, on the night of May 21, a sea turtle nearly 1 meter long and weighing more than 90 kg crawled onto the beach of Nhon Hai commune and laid 103 eggs. Then, three other times in June, the mother turtle continued to come to the beach to lay a total of about 400 eggs.
According to the Department of Fisheries of Binh Dinh province, the mother turtle that laid eggs on Nhon Hai beach four times is a green turtle (Chelonia mydas), which local fishermen call “vich” or “du”. According to the World Conservation Organization, this is a rare, endangered species that needs to be protected.
