14 products including Tangail saree got GI certificate – 2024-04-28 09:25:48

14 products including the traditional Tangail saree of Bangladesh, Rasgolla of Gopalganj and Amritsagar banana of Narsingdi have been recognized as Geographical Indication (GI) and the registration certificates of these products have been distributed.

These certificates were distributed in a ceremony organized by the Directorate of Patents, Industrial Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) of the Ministry of Industry on Thursday (April 25) at the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy’s Multipurpose Hall on Bailey Road in the capital.

The 14 certified products are – Tangail Saree, Rasgolla of Gopalganj, Amritsagar Banana of Narsingdi, Porabari Chamcham of Tangail, Rasmalai of Comilla, Sesame Khaja of Kushtia, Black Bengal Goat of Bangladesh, Handibhanga Mango of Rangpur, Agar of Moulvibazar, Agar Atar of Moulvibazar, Muktagachar Manda, Jashore Date Jaggery, Sweet Pan of Rajshahi and Nakshikantha of Jamalpur.

With this, the number of traditional products of Bangladesh with GI certification by DPDT stands at 31.

Speaking as the chief guest at the event, Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said that Bangladesh is a country with immense potential on the face of the earth. Just as nature has showered diverse resources on this country of six seasons, similarly the hardworking people of this country have increased the fame and reputation of Bangladesh in the world by preparing unique common items through their artistic crafts.

He said, due to unique and unique features like soil, air, water, environment, skills of artisans etc., numerous geographical indications or GI products are spread all over this small territory. In addition to recognizing these scattered products as GI, attention should be paid to their quality and sustainable preservation.

Under the chairmanship of DPDT Director General Munim Hasan, senior secretary of the Ministry of Industries Zakia Sultana, Rector of Foreign Service Academy Ambassador Mashfi binte Shams and additional secretary of the Ministry of Industries Kamrun Nahar Siddika spoke as special guests.

The Minister of Industry said that we need to take effective initiatives and steps to promote and expand GI products in the global market. Bangladesh missions abroad, all international and domestic airports of the country and important places should be centrally arranged for the exhibition of these products. Moreover, GI products can be displayed at various fairs in the country and abroad.

He said that the district and upazila administration can take effective steps for the development and expansion of these products with the cooperation of DPDT, BSIC and SME Foundation under the Ministry of Industry. These resources and products should be disseminated through necessary sponsorship, technical assistance and training.

Senior Industry Secretary Zakia Sultana said, We have already prepared a preliminary list of 500 products that can be recognized as GI. Although a little late, we have taken effective initiatives in this regard.

He said, we have to protect GI products and patent them at the same time. We can give these products as gifts on various festivals, palaparbans and state occasions to promote GI products. Moreover, measures can be taken to promote these products on social media by making TVCs, documentaries.
