100,000 Hungarians can get a driver’s license at a discount: these are the conditions

The government issued the draft decree amending the rules for the training and examination of road drivers and traffic specialists. The new regulations come into force on 1 September and will bring a number of changes to secondary school courses and exams, helping the promised free acquisition of driving licences – says Portfolio.

Back in the spring, the government announced that make obtaining a driver’s license free of charge for Hungarian high school students, however, the statement of Justice Minister Bence Tuzson has since been clarified to the extent that at first only a pilot program will be launched. Now, however, a draft submitted for social consultation clarifies several important elements regarding the system.

According to the plans, from now on it will also be possible to learn the knowledge required to obtain a category “B” driver’s license within the framework of high school.

This affects: traffic basicsdriving theory, structural and operational knowledge, and first aid.

During secondary school courses, free education takes place in the form of closed-system electronic distance learning. The state provides accredited, digital teaching materials for students, which they can access through the study system. Theory exams can also be taken online in computer form. The high schools organize the online exams through the study system and provide the necessary technical conditions. The time and location of the exams is determined by the school, and the institution also provides exam supervision.

According to the new regulations, secondary schools will manage applications and secure them through the study system for obtaining a driver’s license access to necessary study materials. The system ensures the registration of students’ medical suitability data, as well as the monitoring of participation in first aid demonstration sessions. During the courses and exams, the school administrator can check compliance with the conditions and regulations necessary for the performance of the activity. The government estimates that roughly 100,000 people will be affected by the discounts. The new regulation will enter into force on September 1, 2024.
