10 ingredients that make your delicious soup incredibly tasty

Snow Weather (What’s in a name?) asks for a cup of steaming soup. She warms us inside, literally and figuratively. With these 10 ingredients you will be perfect on fire of your soup. Because that makes it not tasty, but insanely delicious!

Remember those crispy soup balls? And do you also have a bottle of Maggi somewhere in the back of your kitchen cupboard? It was really tasty in your soup, I’ll admit it right away. But it’s not the most culinary decision you’ll ever make in your life. The following ingredients will transform your bowl of soup into a culinary tour de force. A title it deserves, right?

Roasted garlic

I bet you make the soup by frying onion and garlic first. Hey, you can earn a lot of profit there. First, roast the garlic in the oven. This makes it soft and sweet and gives a great flavor to your soup. Furthermore, the spiciness is eliminated without completely losing the flavor of the garlic. I don’t do it any other way anymore.

Seeds, kernels and cereals

Do you want to give your soup an extra touch of flavor? Then sprinkle a mixture of seeds, kernels and grains on top. You can give it your all if you want. Pumpkin seeds? Quinoa? Oatmeal? Anything is possible and you can even season it to your taste. Roast the seeds, grains and grains in the oven first. It makes them extra tasty (and crunchy).

Greek yogurt

For some soups, something good and fresh might be useful. Let that bucket of Greek yogurt in your fridge be perfect for this. Often one tablespoon is enough to make the soup nice, creamy and fresh. Crème fraîche is also fine, if for example half a container remains. Do you find Greek yogurt or crème fraîche too acidic? You can also use ricotta. Or how about a spoonful of milder soy or coconut yogurt?

Lemon, lime or orange juice

Does your soup not only need something fresh, but also something acidic? Then take a lemon, lime or orange from the fruit bowl. Lemon really gives a sour note to your soup, orange also adds something sweet. The latter is delicious, for example, in carrot or pumpkin soup. If you want the flavor of lemon, lime or orange to be even more intense, choose the zest. (With you all time favorite Microplane obviously.)

Popcorn

Anyone who thought that popcorn at the cinema could only be eaten from the bucket was wrong. Popped corn kernels can also be added to the soup. Why not? They give your soup more filling and flavor. The latter, especially if seasoned in advance, with Italian herbs for example. Obviously salted popcorn is preferable. But if you want to experiment with something sweet (maybe dropcorn?): definitely do it. Brilliant things often happen at the most unlikely times.

Beer or wine

We’ve known for a long time that we don’t just drink beer and wine anymore. From beer bitterballen to red wine pasta dough, we’ve seen it all. So why not in your soup? Beer, for example, works well in soups with meat and mushrooms. A dash of (red) wine, however, is fantastic in a bowl of onion soup.

Ginger

Could your soup use a little spice in the ass? Then choose… ginger. Preferably fresh ginger, which has the most intense and rich flavor. But a generous pinch of powdered ginger is also possible. For a piece of fresh ginger you can take the Microplane back from the drawer. You can also coarsely chop the ginger root, then leave the pieces to soak in the broth. Ginger is especially a good flavoring in sweeter soups, such as carrot soup, pumpkin soup, and sweet potato soup.

A super tip that is also very economical: dip a piece of shank or marrow in the broth. Gives your soup a more intense and deeper flavor. No doubt the butcher around the corner has them lying around. Sometimes you even get them for free, because they are actually residual products. Win win!

That

I want cheese, even in my soup. Or on soup, as a sort of condiment. Gratin cheese on onion soup is obviously a classic. But you can experiment with cheese and soup a lot more than you think. Even stronger cheeses, like feta and blue cheese, can give your soup something amazing. Especially if you pair it with chopped nuts and herbs, like walnuts and parsley.

Worcestershire sauce

Worces… Yes, it doesn’t matter. It may be the most unpronounceable product in your kitchen cupboard, but it works wonders for your soup. What does it add? Especially the very pleasant umami taste, created by the anchovies in the sauce. It has a fairly strong flavour. So a little is enough to transform your soup into a delicious flavor bomb.
