Yenny Wahid Touches on Veddriq Leonardo’s Champion Mentality: He’s a Regular on the Podium

JAKARTA – Indonesian rock climbing athlete, Veddriq Leonardo, won a gold medal Paris 2024 Olympics . The General Chairperson of the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI), Yenny Wahid, assessed that Veddriq indeed has a champion mentality.

Veddriq won the gold medal after defeating Wu Peng from China in the men’s speed final which took place at Le Bourget Climbing Venue, Paris, France, Thursday (8/8/2024) yesterday. won with a time of 4.75 seconds. While Wu Peng achieved a time of 4.77 seconds which was a difference of 0.02 seconds.

The achievement received the highest appreciation from Yenny, as the General Chairperson of FPTI. The 49-year-old woman admitted that Veddriq has a champion mentality with evidence of his achievements being very stable and proud in several prestigious world rock climbing competitions.

“Veddriq is indeed extraordinary. He started a long time ago, mentally he has a champion mentality,” said Yenny, quoted from the Kemenpora website, Friday (9/8/2024).

“In the world championships that we sent him, he was almost always on the podium and his achievements, his mentality is stable, indeed his mentality is the mentality of a champion,” he continued.

Yenny, who witnessed Veddriq’s struggle firsthand, said the euphoria at Le Bourget Climbing Venue was extraordinary. Moreover, when the song Indonesia Raya was sung. She said, many Indonesian supporters could not hold back their tears.

“The euphoria was extraordinary, many Indonesian supporters could not hold back their tears because they were moved, especially when the song Indonesia Raya was played in front of the world public and especially when the Red and White was raised, the atmosphere was extraordinary,” said the politician from the National Sovereignty Party (PKB).

Veddriq’s achievement also made history by making the sport of rock climbing for the first time present a medal for Indonesia at the Olympics. Even for now, Veddriq is the only Indonesian rock climbing athlete who has succeeded in contributing a medal for the Red and White in the four-year event.

Veddriq’s gold medal is also the first gold medal won by Indonesia at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In fact, the medal became a spur for Rizki Juniansyah. Because, Rizki also managed to contribute a gold medal through weightlifting.

Currently, Indonesia has won a total of two gold medals and one bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The bronze medal was won by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the women’s singles badminton event.
