More than 24 applications from composers from Argentina, Peru and Chile arrived for the call led by Alejandra Urrutia together with Fanjul&Ward and the Teatro Municipal de Santiago.

The idea was to invite composers to submit their works to be performed by the Santiago Municipal Chamber Orchestra on August 28.

The selected works are “Prelude” by Chilean composer Florencia Novoa; “Roots to Infinity IV”, for string orchestra by Peruvian composer Claudia Álvarez; “To Gabriela Mistral” by Chilean composer Mariela Paz Sánchez; “A Cry in the Desert” by Chilean composer Carlos Zamora; “Three Postcards” by Argentine composer Darío Duarte; “Égida” by Chilean composer Felipe González; “Reminiscences” by Chilean composer Ignacio Escobar; “In the Deep” by Chilean composer Lucas Muñoz; “Serenade for Strings” by Argentine composer Maxi Luna and “Inshalah” by Chilean composer Rafael Díaz.

This is a unique opportunity to meet new composers who sometimes do not find opportunities to have their works played and heard, says Alejandra Urrutia.

The 10 selected works will be rehearsed in two open rehearsals – “Contemporary Readings” – with the Santiago Municipal Chamber Orchestra and its principal conductor, Alejandra Urrutia. During these two open rehearsals, the composers will be able to listen to their works, work directly with the orchestra’s musicians and their conductor, make changes to the score, receive suggestions from the musicians and eventually make a personal audiovisual recording.

For the final concert, five works will be chosen from those worked on in the rehearsals and the concert will take place on August 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sala Arrau of the Teatro Municipal de Santiago. These works will also be performed by the Santiago Municipal Chamber Orchestra during the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
