The conflict in Ukraine has once again proven the effectiveness of the Buk army air defense missile complex family.
Viking air defense missile complex.
The ability to operate in a unified or single system in ambushes on enemy aircraft shows that the Buk missile complex is a very dangerous weapon when used with reasonable tactics, including the use of weapons. Buk-M3 can be upgraded.
Designed and developed by the Almaz-Antey design complex, the Buk-M3 began being equipped with the Russian Army in 2016 and was promoted for export at the Army 2019 International Military Forum under the name Viking.
The biggest difference of the Viking version compared to previous generations of Buk is a completely new computer control system that provides broadband data processing and analysis capabilities to help the combination react quickly and accurately. in complex combat environments or under strong electronic warfare.
Along with that, the complex’s interceptor ammunition has been redesigned and placed in a launch and storage tube to help increase protection and service time. The number of bullets per launch vehicle is also doubled to improve combat performance. The Viking complex uses two lines of solid fuel interceptor missiles, 9M317 and 9M317M, with a wide range of operations from against low-flying UAVs to supersonic targets such as ballistic missiles with flying speeds of up to 3,000m/s.
Because it is an army air defense weapon, the entire Viking system is placed on a tracked vehicle chassis with high cross-country ability. A Viking battalion includes 6 launch vehicles, a radar station and a command center that can simultaneously track and destroy 36 targets at a distance of up to 100km and an interception ceiling of up to 40km. Viking’s combat capabilities can also be expanded thanks to its connection to the unified command system, allowing it to proactively monitor the target’s flight path within the combat range.
In the Ukrainian battlefield, the “domestic” Viking version has proven to be an effective army air defense weapon with a successful interception rate of over 90%.
