The US military has launched a new airstrike against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The attack was carried out on Thursday (February 9). US officials disclosed this information on Friday. The American press reported this news.
US forces destroyed four boats carrying explosive drones and seven long-range anti-ship cruise missile launchers on Thursday, the US military’s Central Command said. They claimed they posed a risk of targeting ships in the Red Sea.
“They posed a potential threat to US Navy ships and merchant ships in the region,” Central Command said. These actions will protect freedom of navigation and make international waterways safer for US naval and merchant ships.’
However, the Houthis have not yet commented on this attack and damage.
The Houthis have been targeting commercial ships in the Red Sea since November. They claim that they are carrying out these attacks in response to Israel’s military aggression in Gaza and in support of the Palestinians.
They claim that they are targeting ships owned or operated by Israel. But US officials claim the Houthis have often targeted ships with weak or no clear ties to Israel. As a result, the free movement of ships on a key route used for international trade between Asia, the Middle East and Europe is hampered.
In recent weeks, the United States and the United Kingdom and their other allies have launched joint and concerted attacks against the Houthis. At the same time, they carried out airstrikes targeting Houthi missile arsenals and launch sites used for attacks.
