JAKARTA – Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Daryono explained earthquake Magnitude 6.1 rocked East Seram, Maluku on Monday (6/5/2024) at 01.33 WIB.

The earthquake occurred at coordinates 3.17° South Latitude; 131.00° East Longitude, or located in the sea at a distance of 57 Km Southeast of Eastern Seram, Maluku at a depth of 19 Kilometers (KM) triggered by the activity of the North Seram thrust fault.

“By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to the activity of the North Seram Thrust. The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism,” said Daryono.

Daryono added that based on the estimated shaking map (shakemap), this earthquake caused shaking in the Waru Bay area, East Seram with an intensity scale of V MMI (Vibrations were felt by almost all residents, many people woke up), Tolu Bay area, Kian Darat, East Seram with an intensity scale of IV – V MMI (Vibration felt by almost all residents, many people woke up).

The Bula City area has an intensity scale of IV MMI (if it is felt by many people in the house during the day), the Fakfak City area has an intensity scale of III – IV MMI (if it is felt by many people in the house during the day).

Then, Aimas City, Teminabuan City with an intensity scale of III MMI (Vibrations felt real in the house, felt as if a truck was passing by) and the Sorong City area with an intensity scale of II – III MMI (Vibrations felt real in the house. Vibrations were felt as if a truck was passing by) .

“Until now there have been no reports of the impact of damage caused by this earthquake. Modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami,” he said.

Daryono noted that as of 02.15 WIB, BMKG monitoring results showed that there were two aftershock activities with M3.9 and M3.5

“The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be justified. To avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake. Check and ensure that the building where you live is sufficiently earthquake resistant, or that there is no damage due to dangerous earthquake vibrations. the stability of the building before you return to the house,” he said.
