On January 22, the People’s Court of Kien Giang province opened a first instance trial for 70 defendants in a land dispute between two gangs in Phu Quoc, causing 8 casualties. The trial is expected to last 15 days.
Due to the large number of defendants and related people, the Provincial People’s Court had to hold the trial at the Provincial Cultural Center. From early morning, the police force was present to ensure security and order.
The defendants committed the following crimes: Murder; disturbing public order; concealing crimes; Illegally storing, transporting, trading, and using military weapons. This is a shocking case that occurred at the end of October 2022, killing 2 people and injuring 6 people.
According to the indictment of the Provincial People’s Procuracy, stemming from a land dispute that occurred in Ben Tram hamlet (in Cua Duong commune, Phu Quoc city), Nguyen Van Thai (36 years old, also known as Thai bus, Phu Quoc city) and many others. Another defendant undertook to provide protection for measuring disputed land for a resident in Ben Tram hamlet.
On October 27, 2022, Thai bus led 52 “juniors” in many cars to the disputed land area.
When arriving at the above land, Thai bus’s group argued and clashed with Nguyen Van Truong’s group (36 years old, residing in Phu Quoc City) who had been present at the land before.
During the scuffle, two people in the Thai bus group, Nguyen Van Qua (27 years old) and Doan Thien Long (23 years old, living in Phu Quoc City) led their accomplices to pursue Nguyen Van Truong’s group.
After that, Long used a shotgun to shoot 3 times at Truong’s group. As a result, PTH (26 years old, residing in Nghe An province) and NAT (28 years old, residing in Ca Mau province) died; Truong and 5 other people in the same group were injured.

When the case occurred, the Police Investigation Agency of Kien Giang Province confiscated many exhibits such as guns, knives, spears, machetes, swords…; Temporarily confiscated 14 cars of the subjects.
